Earth Day Cefalù 2019
On the occasion of the 49th World Earth Day, the 7th edition of EARTH DAY CEFALU’- #7DAYSFORYOU, an event organized by the Municipality of Cefalù in collaboration with Fare Ambiente Cefalù-Madonie will take place from 22 to 28 April 2019.
Taking inspiration from World Earth Day, an event celebrated globally on April 22, Earth Day Cefalù was conceived and coordinated in 2013 by the architect Salva Francesca Mancinelli. She has held the reins of the event ever since and has further distinguished herself for her work and expertise as an advisor on Green Economy to the Mayor of Cefalù, Rosario Lapunzina, a strong believer in both the environmental and touristic potential of these activities.
The message of EARTH DAY is one of the preservation of our planet and of sustainable progress. An ecologically forward-thinking Spring is the perfect prelude to a beautiful Summer...
The event was conceived both to promote the city's tourist image and at the same time give a platform to practical initiatives which raise awareness of environmental issues. This seventh edition of EARTH DAY CEFALU', which for a fifth consecutive year has received the official 'moral patronage' of the Ministry of the Environment, promises to spark excitement that will be impossible to resist. Aiming both to celebrate Planet Earth and to promote its preservation, this year's festival will see an entire week of events around the Easter weekend and is aiming to inspire active participation from one and all, young and old alike.
Earth Day Cefalù will play host to a wealth of sporting activities, but offers so much more besides. Take a guided nature walk and discover the urban park of the Rock of Cefalù or the beautiful village of Sant Ambrogio, immersed in greenery and with picturesque sea views. Horse trials for adults and children will be held in the magnificent setting of the public estate of the Ortolani di Bordonaro Castle. Witness sea turtles being released on Cefalù's seafront and golden eagles from the Rock above, among numerous other events all seeking to highlight the importance of outdoor pursuits in an eco-sustainable lifestyle in harmony with the Green Economy.
Nor will the 2019 edition overlook the tremendous value of the city's urban environment, from the magnificent Norman architecture, in particular the imposing Basilica Cathedral (recognised since July 2015 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site), to the charming Municipal Theatre and of course not forgetting the unique and unmissable natural and historical significance of the Rock itself. Students of Cefalù's Art School will create installations in the streets and courtyards of the town; environmental awareness campaigns will visit primary and secondary schools and higher education institutions too will participate, with Erasmus projects addressing environmental sustainability. The exhibition hall of the Palazzo Comunale (The Santa Caterina Octagon) will host the satellite photo exhibition "Max Serradifalco Earth Day 2019 - The Spirit of the Earth"; concerts, afternoon shows and promenade performances will fill the streets; experts in the field of eco-sustainability will gather for conferences on these issues and there will be an extraordinary cleaning of the seabed in collaboration with various associations. The centre of Piazza Duomo will be transformed into a unique Temporary Garden and sculptor Luigi Aricò will unveil his work 'Terra'. Younger children will be entertained and inspired throughout the week with workshops by the BabyPlanner team and then by the captivating promenade performances of "Alice in the Wonderland" and "Gaia" by the creative company Accademia Creative, brought to life with aerial dance and stilt performers. Last but certainly not least, the magical and stunning Grand Spring Dance will throng along the streets of the historic centre.
Returning once again this year are the Illustramente Children's Illustration and Literature Festival featuring the beautiful work "Fata Flora and you, A world to protect" and around the center the Running Sicily: Conad Cup race 2019.
A highlight of this seventh edition will be a mobile planetarium on the Lungomare of Cefalù, offering a chance to admire incredible views of the solar system and our beautiful Planet Earth.

Nearby, the Mandralisca Museum offers archaeological exhibits and an art gallery with a portrait of Antonello da Messina. Its beaches are particularly appreciated by lovers of surfing and sailing, thanks to the constant winds that blow in from the sea...
